Elon Musk is the richest man in the world. But he didn’t get there alone. He built a tribe of other like-minded people to do work-life with. I think this is brilliant. (Read his book). I am really inspired by the video above and want to share my thoughts.

Last year I left my role in trading airplane parts to pursue my passion of helping entrepreneurs reach their full potential. This led me to start the CQ Mastermind, with 12 high-performance entrepreneurs from different industries..

Should you avoid small talk?

In sales is small talk productive, or should you get down to business?

The magic answer: It depends on your prospect’s personality
But you might not know this person.
Seasoned sales pros know how to feel out their prospect.

I’ve conducted 1000’s of sales calls in beer, consulting, coaching, aerospace trading, payments, and many more.

I’ve figured out a slick way to feel out your prospect’s personality so you can best connect with them.

Here’s how I do it: Set the Agenda

It’s important to set the agenda at the beginning of the call to get a feel for the mood and personality of your prospect. Here’s my script:

Nancy - Thanks for jumping on a call with me. This will take only 30 minutes. Does that still work with you? Here’s the agenda for the call. By the end of this call I hope to accomplish _____? Does that sound fair?

Let’s break this down:

Nancy - Thanks for jumping on a call with me. This will take only 30 minutes. Does that still work with you?

Sets expectations for call duration
Asks permission to commit to duration
Gain insight into how busy they are by their response

Here’s the agenda for the call. By the end of this call I hope to accomplish _____?


Show’s you’re organized
Communicates what will happen on the call
Mitigates surprises and sales resistance from prospect

Does that sound fair?

Prospect gets a say in the agenda
You are getting the prospect to agree with the plan
Warms prospect up to your close - NO SURPRISES


Takeaway: When you use this script you gain insight into whether the prospect wants to chit-chat or get down to business. Try this script and let me know if it helps!
